A hunting dog is sometimes the only way to hunt. Especially with upland bird hunting. Without a dog you will never find some of these birds. I have been pheasant hunting with a dog at point and never saw the bird until i stepped on him.
Remember that hunting dogs are not cheap. Even if you are going to train your dog yourself you will be putting in a lot of hours working with your dog. Year round working with your dog is a very time consuming task, but in the end you will have a great hunting buddy.
